1. Summary
We respectfully request that the Medfield Select Board adopt a policy authorizing the display of the Pride Flag on town-owned flagpoles each June, beginning in June 2027, as a recurring tradition recognizing the LGBTQ+ residents and families of Medfield.
2. Background
Many Massachusetts municipalities, including Newton, Wellesley, Brookline, Boston, Dedham, and Natick, display the Pride Flag on municipal property during Pride Month or year-round. These displays are widely understood as expressions of community inclusion rather than political endorsement.
3. Requested Action
- Authorize display of the Pride Flag on a designated town flagpole each June, beginning June 1, 2027.
- Designate the display as an annual, recurring practice, not contingent on annual re-approval.
- Display the Pride Flag alongside (not in place of) the United States and Commonwealth of Massachusetts flags.
4. Rationale
A visible, recurring symbol of welcome supports the well-being of LGBTQ+ residents, signals to visitors that Medfield is an inclusive community, and aligns Medfield with the practice of its peer towns. The cost is minimal and the gesture is widely understood.
5. Scope & Limits
This proposal applies only to the display of the Pride Flag during the month of June on town-owned property. It does not propose changes to other flag policies, school curricula, or municipal services.
6. Respectfully submitted by
Celebrate Medfield Pride, a group of Medfield residents.
